We offer our photo plaques in two wood species, Cherry and Red Alder. The Cherry is a medium dark wood while the Red Alder is a lighter tone and laser engraves a bit darker than the Cherry does which shows the engraved image better. We recommend the Red Alder for photographs for this reason.
Our wood plaques have a 3/8 inch decorative edge which reduces the overall engraving area by 3/4 of an inch in both the height and width. The standard size plaques have 2 key holes for hanging in both formats, portrait and landscape which allows the plaques to hang flat against a surface. Plaques that are custom made to your size specifications do not include key holes or hangers.

Technical Information
I have plaques in Cherry, Red Alder and Black Walnut in the following sizes;
5” x 7” (4 ¼” X 6 ¼“ engraving area)
6” x 8” (5 ¼” X 7 ¼” engraving area)
8” x 10” (7 ¼” X 9 ¼” engraving area)
9” x 12” (8 ¼” X 11 ¼” engraving area)
12” x 15” (11 ¼” X 14 ¼” engraving area)
I can use either a color or Black & White image or digital image as a TIFF file in Windows format (no MAC file please). A digital image file needs to have a resolution of 250 DPI. The file will be too large to E-mail, please either send the file on a CD or a print on glossy paper that I can than scan in. The actual engraved image will be the same as a Black & White photo, only laser engraved in to the wood. The way it work is this; White will be the surface of the image, black will engrave the deepest with 256 steps for the shades between white and black.
If the subject is mainly dark tones, then the image will mostly burned in and will make it harder to see the image. You want enough light tones in the image so main subject stands out against the background.
A very busy image, like somebody standing among a grove of pine trees, would make it hard to pick out the subject because of all the background detail in the trees, the subject gets kind of blended in to the background.
Light on light or dark on dark do not usually work well either, you need contrast between the main subject and the background. For a person, the photo should be well exposed, front lit and in sharp focus. Side lighting produces a shadow on one side of the face and looks like a mask when laser engraved. The subject should be front lit with even lighting and not in shade so the subject stands out from the background.

Some species laser engrave more uniformly than other species. Wood has a grain pattern that affects the engraving quality of the wood. In Oak and Pine, as an example, there are hard and soft areas in the wood. The laser has a set level of power when engraving and will go deeper in to the softer grain than the harder grain. This is similar to your walking across hard ground and then in to softer ground, you sink deeper in to the soft ground. In Oak and Pine you will see ridges in the engraved areas where the harder grain bands are.
If you choose to supply your own material ,the wood needs to have the surface sealed prior to laser engraving or cutting. The laser process produces a smoky residue that will stain the wood if the surface is not sealed. You may apply your final finish coats once you receive the engraved pieces. The piece should be stained and your finish applied except for your final coats which will also seal the engraving. You may LIGHTLY sand the surface and then apply your final finish coats which will also seal the engraving. After finishing you may either leave the engraved area it's natural laser engraved color or color fill the engraved areas. You need to at least seal the engraved areas prior to staining or coloring the engraved areas to prevent the color from bleeding out in to the surrounding wood.
Please include a small scrap piece of the material with the sealer you used so I may check my laser settings before engraving
I have an engraving area of 12" X 24". The largest piece I can fit inside my machine is 17" X 29", with the 12" X 24" area centered on the plaque. The maximum height that will fit under my laser head is 8" thick.

You know exactly what you want done, I need you to convey the information to me so I may produce the results you need.
I will cut and/or engrave from one piece to small production runs all with the same care and quality regardless of the size of the order.

You may send your own materials or pieces for custom laser engraving as well purchase the plaques or other items we offer here on our web site. For laser engraved photographs please send either a clean copy of the photograph on glossy paper or a digital TIFF file in Windows format (no MAC files please) with a resolution of at least 250 DPI. Images with a low resolution will not engrave well. Also consider the degree of enlargement, small photographs generally will not blow up to large sizes and produce a good image, quality makes a big difference!
I have a $10.00 minimum for orders, shipping and handling are additional.
You may also add text to the plaque but remember, an area will need to be left open for the text.
Charges for laser engraving text or graphics are as follows;
1 to 9 lines of text…… $2.25 per line.
10 to 99 lines of text…. $2.00 per line.
100 or more lines of text…$1.75 per line of text.
As an example; You order one 8" X 10" Photo Plaque with 2 lines of text. The cost would be $69.00 plus $4.50 for the two lines of text plus shipping.
You order 5- 8" x 10" Photo Plaques each with 2 line of text; 5 plaques @ $69.00 each is $345 plus 10 lines of text @ $2.00 per line is 10 lines of text @ $2.00 per line for a total of $10.00 for the text plus shipping.

Please provide detailed instructions with your order. Images may need to be cropped to fit on a plaque, I will contact you if this becomes necessary for further instructions. A description of everything we can do with the laser on every material and every project you can imagine (people have quite the imagination too!) would fill a filing cabinet! So please be as complete in your requests as possible.

Due to recent rate changes and the method by which the United States Postal Service calculates Postal Rates, it has become necessary for Touch of Wood to include Shipping Zone and Shipping Rate Charts to our Order Form.
